As a direct result of PIE and the NAACP's stance on The Achievement Gap, the Nyack School district has reexamined their long standing policy on admission to Honors Classes.
Research has shown that Honors classes often represent the only quality education in the district. That is why, according to The Tulin Report, district "insiders" have used their influence to place their children in the highest tracks.
The schools will be sending home a letter describing their policy towards Advanced/ Honors classes in the Middle and High Schools. This letter should be mailed on April 3rd.
MEETINGS
Two Community Meetings were held simultaneously on April 10th at 7:30pm at the Nyack Center and Valley Cottage Library.
If you are a parent in one of those schools you should know the following:
You have a right to demand that your child be placed in an Honors class.
PREP WORK
Your child may be offered an opportunity to do additional work such as summer programs or summer reading to prepare for that class. This should not be presented to you as a REQUIREMENT for the course. You have the right to refuse the extra help and still take the honors course.
It might be advisable to take take advantage of the extra help. If you need assistance please contact us.
HAVEN'T BEEN NOTIFIED OF THIS?
If you have not received a letter from the district you should immediately contact your child's Guidance Counselor or your building Principal to find out more about this policy.
PIE is of the belief that the most challenging education is the best education and that your child should be encouraged to take Honors classes. You and your child will never know their true potential unless they do "test" themselves by accepting challenges.
As always, if you have issues with this please contact us by Contacting Us.
